How to Get Around Budapest: Guide to Public Transportation (App and Tickets)

The Available Types of Transport

Budapest boasts an efficient and well-connected public transport system comprising buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the iconic Metro. To ensure a seamless journey, it's crucial to familiarise yourself with the different modes and their routes.
  • Buses and Trams: These are the workhorses of Budapest's transit network, navigating both the bustling city centre and the quieter residential areas. Maps and schedules are readily available at stops and online, making it easy to plan your routes in advance.
  • Metro: The Budapest Metro system, with its four lines (M1, M2, M3, M4), is a swift and efficient way to traverse the city. Each line is color-coded, and station announcements are made in Hungarian and English, ensuring you never miss your stop.
Each day in Budapest, there are around 1,900 buses, trams, trolleybuses, metro and suburban railway trains, which have more than 43 thousand departures combined.

  • Rent your own public bike using the MOL Bubi app: These bikes are scattered around Budapest so there will always be one nearby! Use the app to find their locations if you can't spot one. Register on the app and follow the simple instructions as to how to unlock and use the bike.
  • Taxi: you'll find a variety of taxi companies that provide reliable transportation services. Some of the most well-known taxi companies include Fotaxi, Bolt, Taxi 4 and City Taxi.
  • Hop-On and Hop-Off Bus: this is a convenient sightseeing bus service covering iconic landmarks on the Buda side of the city. Travelers can hop on to explore key attractions like Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion, then hop off to explore at their own pace before boarding the next bus. Tickets can typically be purchased for a set duration, such as 24 or 48 hours. You can buy tickets online, at designated ticket counters, or directly from the bus. Most buses also provide earphones that provides audio commentary in multiple languages, offering insights into the history and significance of the sites you pass.

Ticketing and Fare Structure

Before embarking on your Budapest adventure, it's crucial to understand the city's ticketing system. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines, metro stations, or newsstands, and they are valid across all modes of public transport. Keep in mind that validating your ticket before boarding is essential to avoid fines!

I found that on buses, you step on and scan your ticket at the driver’s door using the ticket you bought on the BudapestGO app. However, for the trams, the QR code to scan is on the outside of the door, so if you get on board without scanning first you won’t have the chance to scan on board. I did this and it cost me a 30 Euro fine so be careful!

For frequent travellers, consider purchasing a travel pass for unlimited rides within a specific timeframe. These passes are available for 24 hours, 72 hours, and even longer durations, providing excellent value for those planning an extended stay. This can be purchased online or on the BudapestGo app!
